Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a red cross bearing a silver sword, point down, entwined by a silver serpent, all centered upon a stylized silver fortress; and attached below a tripartite maroon scroll inscribed "SKILLED TO SAVE" in silver letters.

Symbolism
Maroon and white are the colors traditionally associated with the Army Medical Department.  Red symbolizes courage and the life-blood of the personnel served by the organization; the cross is emblematic of medicine.  The sword and serpent suggest the relationship of military forces and the health care professionals who serve and support them.  The fortress represents security, strength and the unit's home location.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 9 March 1988.
